Agricultural Research and Policy for Better Health and Nutrition In Developing Countries: A Food Systems Approach AgEcon
Pinstrup-Andersen, Per.
This paper is about the two-way causal relationships between the global food system and health and nutrition. It argues that the global food system begins and ends with health and that the prioritization and implementation of agricultural research and policy should consider health and nutrition effects. An integrated health and food policy approach is likely to be more effective in achieving both health and economic development goals that the current practice of separate sectorial policies. The paper identifies a large number of health and nutrition factors affecting and affected by the food system and suggests research and policies to enhance positive effects and reduce negative ones.

Commercialization of Agriculture Under Population Pressure: Effects on Production, Consumption, and Nutrition in Rwanda AgEcon

Rapid population growth in agroecologies that are already under high population pressure poses a major challenge for development policy. It becomes an even greater challenge in complex agroecologies where little new technology for rapid agricultural expansion is available. The mountain zones of the Zaire-Nile Divide in Central Africa present an example of such a challenging environment where agriculture has encroached onto marginal zones, that is, water catchment areas and the last tropical forests of the area. The aim of this paper is to examine the effects of nutritional policies on the behavior of firms, particularly in terms of food quality and prices, and to assess the potential impacts of such policies from a public health point of view. We determine how new products that are nutritionally improved can emerge in a market where incumbent firms offer competing unhealthy products. We also highlight a non-intentional effect of such policies: if consumer heterogeneity is high, then an information policy may simultaneously provide health benefits to the population as a whole but worsen the health of consumers that are less aware of nutritional effects. Food Consumption Parameters for Brazil and their Application to Food Policy AgEcon

As success is achieved in raising agricultural output and incomes in general, increased attention is being paid to improving the incomes and nutritional status of the lower-income, more disadvantaged peoples. Food subsidies have become an increasingly important means of transferring income to the poor. Because low-income people spend a much higher proportion of their income on food, food is a relatively efficient area for use of subsidies. Improving Nutrition as a Development Priority: Addressing Undernutrition in National Policy Processes in Sub-Saharan Africa AgEcon

Undernutrition has, fortunately, risen on the policy agenda in Africa in recent years. In 2004, an international IFPRI 2020 conference held in Kampala on food and nutrition security in Africa drew attention to the issue, and high-level policymakers noted the problem and the need for action much more than they had before. Still, undernutrition remains a fundamental challenge to achieving improved human welfare and economic growth in Sub- Saharan Africa. To address that challenge, national governments must undertake appropriate policies and actions. Nutrient profile labelling: consumers’ perceptions in Germany and Belgium AgEcon

Growing consumer interest in food and health has motivated the European food industry to provide more simple information on the nutritional composition of foods. In addition to the traditional back-of-pack nutrition table, simplified front-of-pack labels have been introduced by the food industry to allow consumers making better informed and healthier food choices. In this paper, consumers’ perceptions of simplified nutrition information, namely Guideline Daily Amount (GDA) and Traffic light (TL), in Germany and Belgium are explored.
